    TRAFFIC CONTROL ASSISTANT (PROVISIONAL)
     
    City of Glens Falls is seeking a full-time, provisional, TRAFFIC CONTROL ASSISTANT who will perform routine parking and traffic control work of a NON-POLICE nature. Enforce all parking restrictions and do related work as required under the supervision of a ranking police supervisor.
     
    Residency: Candidates must have been legal resident of Warren or a contiguous County for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the exam.
     
    Salary: $40,019 ($19.24/hour) 40-hour work week with benefit package that includes health insurance (including dental and vision), enrollment in the NYS Retirement system and paid time off.
     
    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
    This appointment is subject to Civil Service Law and Rules. Civil Service exam to be held at a later date.

    TRAFFIC CONTROL ASSISTANT
    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this position is involved in both routine parking enforcement and traffic control work of a non-police nature. The duties include responsibility for assisting in enforcing parking regulations where the motor vehicle is not in motion and issuing tickets for violations in accordance with applicable ordinances. The work also involves assigned responsibility for directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic at congested intersections in order to protect pedestrians and maintain the flow of traffic. The work is performed under the general supervision of a ranking police department supervisor or his/her designee. Does related work as required.
     
    TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
    Patrols assigned routes to determine time duration of parked cars and issues appearance tickets to offenders for
    illegal and overtime parking;
    Advises drivers tactfully as to reasons for issuance of parking violation tickets;
    Observes and reports improper and/or missing signs to the appropriate department;
    Provides information to the public concerning location of public and private parking facilities;
    Directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic at an assigned street intersection or crossing point;
    Signals traffic instructions and directions to operators of motor vehicles or pedestrians at crossing point;
    Regulates directional flow of vehicular traffic in order to enable pedestrians to cross the street and to prevent traffic from backing up;
    Reports minor traffic incidents to police department for appropriate police action;
    Takes note of unusual or suspicious occurrences or actions of individuals and alerts Police Officers in cases of observed or suspected violations of laws and ordinances over which the police department has jurisdiction;
    Observes and reports defective traffic signs and signals;
    Answers questions and gives directions to the general public;
    May be required to appear in court regarding parking violations and summonses;
    May be required to assist the supervisor on duty in the daily logging of issued tickets, notices of unpaid tickets,
    and issuance of court summonses;
    Performs related assigned work as required.
     
    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & ATTRIBUTES:
    Working knowledge of NYS Department of Motor Vehicle Law and applicable local ordinances as they relate to
    assigned duties;
    Ability to deal with the public with both firmness and tact;
    Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely;
    Ability to keep simple records;
    Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
    Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time;
    Willingness to work out-of-doors, occasionally including under adverse weather conditions;
    Dependability, sound judgement.
     
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
     
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
