WASTEWATER LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
The City of Glens Falls is seeking applications for a full-time provisional position of WWTP Lab Technician. The work involves responsibility for performing chemical, biological, microbiological and bacteriological testing and physical analysis of raw and treated wastewater. This is technical laboratory work involving routine testing for the sanitary chemical and physical analysis of wastewater. The work is performed in accordance with the prescribed procedure requiring a high degree of accuracy. Direct supervision is exercised over Wastewater Laboratory Technician.
Starting salary – $45,273 (40-hour wk.) Monday-Friday
Minimum qualifications:- Associate’s degree in chemistry, biology, bacteriology, microbiology or laboratory technology or related field and one year experience in a public or private laboratory; OR
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three years of experience in a public or private laboratory performing technical laboratory duties; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A and B.

WASTEWATER LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for performing chemical, biological, microbiological and bacteriological testing and physical analysis of raw and treated wastewater. This is technical laboratory work involving routine testing for the sanitary chemical and physical analysis of wastewater. The work is performed in accordance with prescribed procedures requiring a high degree of accuracy. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Wastewater Laboratory Chemist. Direct supervision is exercised over Wastewater Laboratory Technicians. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Collects samples for laboratory analyses;
Supervises and conducts laboratory analysis of wastewater and industrial wastes;
Records and tabulates results of all tests and examinations;
Supervises and assists in preparation of various solutions of reagents, and standardization of reagents;
Prepares bacteriological cultures, stains, dyes and chemical solutions;
Operates various types of laboratory equipment including microscope, sterilizers, centrifuges, stills and incubators;
Periodically inspects laboratory equipment to ensure proper condition and correct calibration;
Assists in report preparation;
Supervises and participates in a variety of technical, housekeeping, and clerical activities in the water laboratory.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:
Good knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, practices, equipment, safety precautions and terminology used
in the analyses of wastewater;
Good knowledge of the principles of biology, chemistry, microbiology, bacteriology and physics as they relate to
wastewater analysis;
Good knowledge of the principles of environmental health as they relate to wastewater analysis;
Skill in the operation and care of modern laboratory equipment and apparatus;
Ability to understand and direct technical oral and written directions;
Ability to supervise and work with others;
Ability to prepare and maintain technical records and reports;
Accuracy; thoroughness; good judgment; dependability;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:- An Associate’s degree in chemistry, biology, bacteriology, microbiology or laboratory technology or related field and one (1) year experience in a public or private laboratory; or
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in a public or private laboratory performing technical laboratory duties; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
