Sustainable PR Paves the Way for Siting Solar Energy
November 25, 2024Glens Falls Public Relations Firm Founder Says Community Engagement is the key in the State’s Clean Energy Transition
Tony DeFazio, founder of Glens Falls-based Sustainable PR, joined industry leaders in a panel discussion at the New York Solar Energy Industry Association (NYSEIA) annual Solar Summit. The panel focused on the solutions to siting and permitting challenges currently wrangling solar developers in New York State.
The discussion addressed the growing tension between solar developers, local communities, and state government, with representatives from the New York Association of Towns, NYSERDA, and Montante Solar sharing unique perspectives.
While developers strive to meet the state’s clean energy goals, they face increasing community opposition and local moratoriums that can delay or even halt projects. Local communities, on the other hand, have concerns about potential impacts on property values, community character, and local infrastructure.
To bridge this divide, DeFazio spoke to a comprehensive approach that focuses on the following:
Transparent Communication: Honest and open dialogue is essential to building trust and addressing concerns.
Strategic Community Engagement: Understanding the unique needs and concerns of each community can help developers tailor their outreach efforts.
Positive Storytelling: Sharing compelling stories about the benefits of solar energy can help shift public perception.
“New York’s transition to a clean energy will be won at the local level, said DeFazio. “By proactively engaging communities and communicating the benefits of solar energy while addressing public concerns, only then will we accelerate the transition to a clean energy future,” “Sustainable PR is committed to helping developers navigate this complex landscape and build strong relationships with local communities.”
